Quick Buying Guide — Beds

• Size: Match the frame to your mattress. Twin is 38×75in (97×191cm), Full (also called a double) 54×75in (137×191cm), Queen 60×80in (152×203cm), King 76×80in (193×203cm) and California King 72×84in (183×213cm), which is narrower but longer than a King.
• Mattress support: Look for slats no more than 3in (7.5cm) apart, which many foam and hybrid mattress warranties require. Queen sizes and up should have center support legs, and platform beds don't need a box spring.
• Weight capacity: Check the stated limit, which includes the mattress and sleepers. Queen and King frames generally range from 500lbs (227kg) on budget models to 1,000lbs (454kg) or more on sturdier ones.
• Type and storage: Storage beds with drawers or a lift-up (ottoman) base are great for small rooms. Platform beds with 10–14in (25–36cm) of clearance underneath fit storage bins and most robot vacuums. Check guardrails and top-bunk weight limits on loft and bunk beds.
• Material: Solid wood and metal frames are the most durable and the least likely to squeak. Upholstered and faux leather beds look softer and more stylish but are harder to clean, so look for performance fabric if you have pets.
• Headboard: Not every frame includes one. Look for "with headboard" or "headboard included" in the title if you want a complete look out of the box.
• Extras: Built-in USB or charging ports save on bedside chargers. Adjustable bases let you raise your head or feet, but check that your mattress is compatible (most foam and hybrid ones are).
